Overview
VR Parachute Simulator is an immersive training and recreational simulation focused on authentic freefall aerodynamics and post-deployment canopy control. The simulation accurately represents terminal velocity shifts governed by player posture, canopy inflation dynamics, and wind shear vectors.
By leveraging the Unity XR Interaction Toolkit, the control scheme mirrors actual skydiving steering toggles: pulling down on the left or right riser creates proportional drag, pivoting the parachute and flaring for landing flare flares.
Key Technical Contributions
- Physics-Based Aerodynamic Model: Programmed a continuous drag/lift equation calculating terminal velocity and glide ratios dynamically from player orientation, canopy surface area, and wind drift.
- XR Rope-Handle Steering: Designed interactive toggle grab handles with haptic force feedback; pull distance translates to roll and yaw angular velocity with realistic tension curves.
- Landing & Flare Dynamics: Implemented flare mechanics requiring synchronized two-handed brake pulls at optimal altitudes to decelerate vertical descent for soft touchdowns.
- Locomotion Comfort Tuning: Integrated peripheral tunneling (vignette gating) during high-G turns and rapid pitch changes to virtually eliminate simulator sickness.
- Standalone VR Optimization: Maintained a rock-solid 72/90 FPS performance target on Meta Quest standalone architecture with zero frame drops.
